UF Health Shands Hospital opened in Gainesville in 1958 as the University of Florida's teaching hospital and was renamed in 1965 after state senator W.A. Shands, whose efforts secured state funding for it. It is a private, not-for-profit academic medical center affiliated with the University of Florida and one of two campuses of the UF Health Science Center. The hospital operates Level I adult and pediatric trauma centers and provides care ranging from primary and family medicine to complex tertiary and quaternary services. The wider Gainesville campus includes UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital, opened in 2009 with 192 licensed beds, UF Health Shands Children's Hospital, and UF Health Psychiatric Hospital, established in 1987 with 81 beds.
