Broward Health Medical Center opened in Fort Lauderdale in 1938 as the first hospital of what is now Broward Health, a public health system governed by the North Broward Hospital District. It is a full-service, 716-bed hospital serving Broward County and South Florida, and operates the county's Level I trauma center. Services include emergency care, heart and vascular care with open-heart surgery, comprehensive cancer care, maternity and women's health, joint replacement and orthopedic care, a primary stroke center, rehabilitation and a liver transplant program. Salah Foundation Children's Hospital, a pediatric hospital-within-a-hospital opened in 1996 with a Level I pediatric trauma center, operates on the same campus.
